Heirloom Portraits by Greg Smith
A large format film camera doesn’t just take pictures — it creates portraits that become
heirlooms.
In a world of instant everything, Greg Smith offers something different: a return to the slow,
soulful art of portraiture. In contrast to hobbyists riding the recent wave of analog throwback,
Greg began his study of photography, and embarked on a decades-long career in the
entertainment industry, shooting on film.
Unlike a digital shoot, choosing from a thousand clicks to find the best take, large format film
paints the image. Richer and more tactile, the subjects of each portrait collaborate in this
deliberate process to create profound and timeless keepsakes that last for generations.
In a world of instant images, the slow rhythm of 4x5 photography invites something different —
rather than capture, the camera reflects. Greg’s approach invites subjects to go behind the dark
cloth and view the world through the camera’s ground glass: to choose the setting, compose the
frame, and settle into the moment. This collaboration provides subjects with agency; it draws
children in and creates space for parents to soften and simply be seen. The result is a portrait
that feels not styled, but lived in — a reflection of who we are, not just how we look.
The vibrant nature of film, softness of natural light, and intimacy of process infuse the images
with qualities that clearly differentiate them from digital capture.
For those looking to mark a season of life with artistry and intention, Greg is offering a limited
number of portrait sessions.
Private Sessions
The Consultation
A relaxed, in-depth conversation to get to know one another. Greg will scout locations,
study the light, and collaborate with you on how you’d like to be seen. This typically
takes one to two hours, depending on the setting.
The Shoot
Greg begins with 35mm film in a candid, documentary style, allowing subjects to find
connection in front of the camera, helping everyone settle naturally into the process of
image making.
Large Format Portraiture
Shooting with a 4x5 camera requires each frame to be carefully composed. The pace
slows. Subjects are invited to approve frames and participate in a more intentional
image-making process where presence is the goal.
Post-Production
All film is processed and scanned. Greg reviews the work with you to choose the final
large-format images, which are then artistically mastered.
The Final Delivery
You’ll receive archival-quality prints and all relevant digital files—lasting artifacts of a
meaningful experience.
